Hazards, storage, recycling of aerosol cans 2023-07-22

Harm
When using aerosol cans, attention to safety is a top priority. Whether using an aerosol can indoors or outdoors, safety should be considered. There are three main dangers when using aerosol cans.

1. Explosiveness
Aerosol cans can remain safe if the can and valve remain intact. However, if the jar is punctured, the valve fails, corrodes, or is exposed to excessive heat, the jar will depressurize. In severe cases, the aerosol can may explode.
2. Poisonous and harmful
Do you know what's in your aerosol can? Some aerosols contain hazardous substances and workers must be familiar with the formulation of the material. Personal protective equipment or additional ventilation may be required, determine if hazardous, harmful, and choose safe product.
3. Flammability
Most aerosol can products and propellants are flammable, making aerosol cans a fire hazard. Keep away from open flames and heat sources when in use.

Storage of aerosol cans
Aerosol cans should be stored in a dry area and not exposed to excessive heat. The pressure of an aerosol can increases with temperature. The internal temperature of the vehicle will rise to a high level under direct sunlight, therefore, aerosol cans should not be stored in the vehicle for a long time.

Recycling of Aerosol Cans
Aerosol cans without propellant and product are not considered hazardous waste and are recyclable. Most aerosol cans made of tinplate or aluminum can be recycled, but only if the can is empty. If the can is not empty, it may be classified as hazardous waste, depressurized and empty aerosol cans are not hazardous waste. Piercing aerosol cans makes sense from sustainability and disposal cost considerations. However, puncturing the can with a sharp object, such as a screwdriver, may generate frictional heat and sparks, which are potential sources of ignition. Properly grounded spark-resistant tools should be used to puncture aerosol cans.
